Recap

  • Mazen has snuck out from the palace and is wandering the market in Madinne when he gets distracted by a shadow jinn. The jinn is intent on killing Mazen. Loulie saves Mazen from the jinn and the jinn says she would recognize his blood anywhere. The jinn thinks Mazen is a jinn killer.
  • Loulie has a compass that is a jinn relic that points you in the direction of anything you need to find. According to Qadir, the compass has indicated that Qadir is to stay with Loulie until it says otherwise. Qadir cannot return home because is is no longer welcome there.
  • A blade with a red gem is described. Loulie gave it to Qadir as a gift.
  • Rasul tells the sultan of the Midnight Merchant after his eye is healed with the elixir she sold him.
  • Omar knows about the shadow jinn's presence in Madinne.
  • Qadir always sings a song about a king looking for his lost love.
  • The sultan's guards infiltrate the souk. They take Loulie to the palace on the sultan's orders.
  • Loulie is tested by the sultan. The shadow jinn has possessed Mazen's body. Omar manages to kill the shadow jinn by killing Mazen. Afterwards, they use jinn blood to heal Mazen's wound and revive him.
  • The relic the sultan seeks contains a living jinn bound to the person who finds it. It is buried in the Western Sandseas, a place no one has ever survived travelling to.
  • There is a jinn king in the lamp. The sultan's ancestor is the one who imprisoned him. The sultan intends to use the jinn king to eliminate all of the jinn and revive the barren land. The sultan says his intentions are "pure", not evil.
  • Omar gives Mazen a bangle that he must give his blood to so they can pull a Freaky Friday since Omar is planning a big mission and doesn't want to accompany Loulie to find the relic.
  • Aisha is going too. Aisha and the other guards will know it is not Omar with them.
  • Fire magic is Qadirs affinity. He can only do that and shape shift into a lizard.
  • Aisha gets separated during a sandstorm and starts hallucinating dead relatives.
  • When Mazen and Loulie go to find Aisha, Mazen starts digging in a dune and disappears. Loulie uses the compass and follows him.
  • Mazen sees his dead mother. She starts singing the same song she always sings. He becomes convinced he needs to touch the circlet of bones.
  • Loulie sees her father. He also starts singing the song.
  • The dead loved ones are ghouls.
  • Singing the song led them to the Queen of Dunes.
  • Mazen was able to resist putting on the circlet but Loulie started to so Mazen had to fight her to get her away from it.
  • Aisha grabs the circlet and shoves it in her bag. The Queen says "she is free finally".
  • They arrive in Dhyme while Loulie has a nightmare about their campsite burning.
  • There are rumors about The Hunter in Black. He is rumored to have killed more jinn than Omar.
  • Mazen discovers he can use his shadow to disappear--a result of being possessed by the shadow jinn.
  • The compass is a living thing. It has a soul.
  • Ahmed puts on the collar and gets possessed by the Queen of Dunes.
  • Mazen's blood is black.
  • A relic and an enchanted object are not the same. A relic contains the soul of a jinn after their death. Enchantments on objects fade after the jinn's death.
  • The compass contains the soul of someone precious to Qadir.
  • The compass was leading Qadir to jinn so he could help them in their death.
  • Qadir saved Loulie's life when her tribe was slaughtered.
  • When Mazen takes the cuff off, his blood is no longer black.
  • Aisha meets up with Junaid who is a jinn hunter that hunts in Dhyme. Aisha tells him of the collar and tells him to tell the king she will return with it.
  • Qadir committed a crime in Dhahab which is why he's not welcome there anymore.
  • Qadir and his horse fell into a trap of iron spikes while fighting off a hoarde of ghouls.
  • Aisha knows Qadir is a jinn.
  • They have encountered the Hunter in Black. His name is Imad. Imad starts to take all of the relics, including Mazen's cuff so his cover has now been blown.
  • Qadir is dead.
  • Imad is one of the thieves that killed Loulie's tribe. They were after the compass.
  • Everyone alive has now been imprisoned by Imad.
  • Mazen is using his shadow to wander the prison and attacks the men to escape with Aisha. When Imad's guards went back to the trap, the only thing there was the dead horse.
  • Imad has gotten ahold of Qadir's blade.
  • Mazen has the blade now and realizes Qadir is inside of it and can talk to him via his mind.
  • Aisha has taken the blade.
  • The prison seems to sing into the Sandsea.
  • An apparition appears after a wall of blue flames. Qadir?
  • Imad was about to tell Loulie what Qadir really is but Qadir via the blade helped her get her vengeance by killing the man that killed her family.
  • Aisha is dying. The Queen of Dunes convinces her to make a deal so that she can be saved. The Queen says Aisha's will will be her own.
  • Qadir is not dead.
  • After a few chapters of travelling, we arrive in the final stop before the Sandseas. Here Mazen sees wanted posters with his face on them for the murder of the sultan.
  • Ahmed is dead. He died at the palace fighting against Omar.
  • Aisha left the group to meet up with Omar. Loulie, Qadir, and Mazen decide to continue to search for the lamp on their own. Mazen finds the lamp, like stupidly easily but the lamp is empty. It's just a lamp.
  • Mazen encounters Omar and Omar tells Mazen that he will give Omar the lamp and return to Madinne to be tried for "his" crimes. We learn that Mazen was going to be named sultan instead of Omar.
  • Omar's blood is black.
  • Omar's mother was a jinn. The sultan basically traumatized Omar into becoming a jinn killer.
  • Omar's earring is a relic. It allows him to disappear.
  • Omar cuts his palm and places it on the lamp and binds the jinn king to him.
  • The jinn in the lamp is Rijah, the Shapeshifter.
  • Omar commands Rijah to kill Qadir.
  • Aisha realizes that one of Omar's other thieves is a jinn. Omar confirms that more than half of the thieves are jinn.
  • Aisha uses the Queen of Dunes' magic to raise Tawil (the jinn that made her realize that Omar's other thieves are jinn also) so that she can kill Omar.
  • Omar drops the lamp and Loulie grabs it. Mazen cuts his palm and Loulie gives him the lamp. Mazen commands Rijah to stop fighting Qadir.
  • Omar has reinforcements coming.
  • Omar was the one who killed Mazen's mother.
  • Omar's mother, Aliyah, had illusion magic.
  • Aisha is using the Queen of Dunes' magic to reanimate all the corpses to fight against their fellow thieves.
  • Loulie rips Omar's earring out of his ear but cannot make it work for her.
  • Qadir has been blasting holes in the sand.
  • Qadir convinces Loulie and Mazen to ride Rijah (who is currently a rukh) to the jinn world. They get there through one of the holes Qadir blasted in the sand.
  • Rijah tells Loulie and Mazen that Qadir is not A jinn king, he is THE jinn king.
